Todays BBC news carried the (almost) unbelievable story of a Postman who has been suspended for advising his customers how to opt-out of the Royal Mail’s direct marketing.
Postman Roger Annies composed and circulated a leaflet about the Royal Mail’s opt-out clause for unsolicited mail during his rounds in Barry, south Wales.
Royal Mail have given no concise reason for the suspension. A spokeswoman for the Royal Mail said: “We can confirm that a postman employed at Barry delivery office has been given a precautionary suspension on full pay pending further investigations following an alleged misconduct issue.
Misconduct? Isn’t this just good customer support? Surely the Royal Mail and it’s direct marketing clients don’t want to waste valuable time and money delivering direct marketing information to people who genuinely don’t want it?
Having had several acrimonious dealings with the Royal Mail myself (especially with Parcel Farce) – one of which required me to (successfully) sue the Royal Mail in order to obtain compensation, I can’t say I’m truly surprised by this action. In the new religion called “the free market” the worst sin that can be committed is to reduce the bottom line…
Since we can’t find any mention of how to opt out from the Royal Mail’s “Door to door” direct marketing on the Royal Mail website we thought we would continue Roger’s good work by publishing the opt-out contact details below:-
To opt out, send a letter to:-
Royal Mail Door to Door Opt-out
Kingsmead House
Oxpens Road
Oxford OX1 1PX
or telephone: 08457 950950
you can also try sending e-mail to: optout@royalmail.co.uk
Your letter must include your name and postal address (including postcode) and should inform Royal Mail that you wish to opt out of the Royal Mail door to door scheme and should instruct Royal mail to take the appropriate action to make this happen.
Cheers Roger – Keep up the good work mate!

Unbelievable. Only an ex government dept like the post office could be so stupid
